- There was a fire in 1873 that started at Tucker's bakehouse with the colonnaded porch and spread up the hill to Peter Street. All the houses were thatched at that time so the fire quickly spread. Traces of the original buildings can be seen at the lower end of Back Street.
- The Inn sign of the Queen's Head public house can be seen half way up the hill. After it was rebuilt after the fire it was renamed the Butcher's Arms.
- The Olde White Lion which escaped the fire, had a thatched roof in those days as well.
LOWER PART OF HIGH STREET AROUND 1900 - All these buildings are new and the thatch roofs was replaced by slate.
- The shop blind protects the combined Post Office and Bakery.
- The gentleman with the dog is Mr. William Baker, headmaster of Bradninch School.
VIEW UP THE HILLL IN 2001 VIEW UP THE HILL IN 1908 - The street was much narrower then with a water ditch on each side of the street.
- The railings to the left are no longer there.
